October already!

September's meeting was very nice, we managed to grab some of the upholstered chairs at CL Finch so we were very comfortable. "Persuasion" was such a good book, made for a great discussion .

I don't think we mentioned venue for October's meeting at the last meeting, let's meet at John's for supper at 6 pm with discussion at 7 on the 14th (I think it is)(The day after Thanksgiving). As mentioned previously, we will be discussing 'The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd. For those who are interested, there is the discussion of the same book at Mall Rd. library on the last Tuesday of the month. I'm planning on going as is Catherine I believe. The movie is coming out on the 18th, it looks wonderful, Queen Latifah and Jennifer Hudson are in it. Is anyone interested in going to see it?

Jetsetter Donna will be away again, but I believe Meg (and sister Nicole?) will be joining us (for supper too I think!). A regular customer at the store has been reading the book and has said that she will be at the meeting. It will be nice to have someone new join us. Her name is Nicole as well.

We will be reading "Clan of the Cave Bear" by Jean Auel in November. Perhaps we can talk Donna into having us at her store for a change? Much cosier and quieter there. I've strayed from the reading list. Can anyone think of anything Christmassy or uplifting for December? Preferably with a good movie that we can get together to watch. We'll talk about it on the 14th.

Third Year Anniversary

We celebrate the beginning of our third year this September by discussing "Persuasion" by Jane Austen. As a number of people will be away, we will meet on September 15th instead of the second Monday. We'll meet at Coffee Lodge Finch at 7.

Changing things up a bit for October. I thought we could attend a different book club meeting to find out how things are done elsewhere. I spoke to the lady in charge of the book group at Mall Road library. She said that they would be discussing "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd on the last Tuesday of the month. She loaned me a copy of the book and it is excellent. She said the date might change as she might be going out of town, she would call me if it changed. I didn't think that would work too well for us, particularly as I have since noticed that the library is advertising an author book reading and signing for that same night.

So, we will read that book and have our regular meeting on the second Monday. Then those of us who want to to go the library meeting at the end of the month can do that too. Covers all bases I think. There will be lots to talk about. So, no Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd in October.

I am really enjoying reading "Persuasion" again. We should have a lot to talk about then too.

Enjoyed Mama Mia

Had a really nice time on July 20th. The usual suspects met for lunch at East Side Mario's and then went to see Mama Mia. We all enjoyed the movie, it was so funny.

Catherine and I decided to go back to see it again on cheap Tuesday. Got to the theatre and fortuitously found a good spot to park. We got into the theatre just as it started to pour rain. We were patting each other on the back for our good timing when we realised that the show was sold out. No problem, we decided to see the Batman movie since we were there anyway. Both those shows were sold out as well..........Sooo, if anyone is interested in seeing it again, we will try again tomorrow, cheap Tuesday one week later. The show is at 7.20.

The book we will be reading in August is titled, 'All Creatures Great and Small", NOT "All Things Bright and Beautiful" as previously mentioned. As the song goes, 'All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small" I thought for sure the order of the books would be the same. Foiled again. The first is " All Creatures Great and Small." We will will meet at John's Restaurant on August 11th at 6 pm. for supper or 7 pm. for the discussion .

Meg and Nicole are forsaking us once again, this time for a trip out west to see family. Their priorities seem to be messed up, first going to a Bon Jovi concert and now visiting family instead of book club!

So we read To 'Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee in April (welcome Meg's sister Nicole), did a Book Circle in May (Gayle joined us) and discussed 'Watership Down' by Richard Adams in June. I really liked 'Watership Down' but it was not a favourite with everyone. I'm not sure Catherine understood it properly, she kept talking about transvestite bunnies!?! 'To Kill a Mockingbird' was wonderful of course so we got together in May to watch the movie.

We totally bailed on 'Sons and Lovers' (Lawrence) (supposed to have discussed in May) and will be ignoring Voltaire (July) in favour of a frivolous day out to see 'Mama Mia' the movie on July 20th . In August we will read and discuss 'All Things Bright and Beautiful' by James Herriott which is a lovely read but will not really tax our sun bedazzled brains.

Then it will be back to business with 'Persuasion' by Jane Austen in September then 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' by Robert Louis Stevenson in October. I am not sure of venues, will edit this blog after I look up details.

I will also add details of our Mama Mia plans. ......Beautiful Greek scenery, great music, C___ F____, P___B___. Can't wait!

So the Hunchback went much as expected. We had a nice meal and a chat. Juli's comment, "I kind of thought that the Hunchback would not go so well...Hugo, though an amazing author, is not exactly an easy read.".....I thought that was well put, and know that we all agree.

Next month will be be much better. I have a sign up at the store about "To Kill a Mockingbird"and have heard a few of the customers talking about it. That will be at Coffee Lodge Exmouth, on April 14th. It is my youngest son's 19th birthday that night. We will be going out for a drink to celebrate (after our meeting of course) you are all welcome to join us.

My Bookcrossing plans have come to fruition.(like that word?) Many wonderful customers have brought bags of books in for me to display at the store. I am only putting out about 6 at a time for people to find. If you are ever without a book to read, come in and help yourselves.

Hunchback

I honestly remember reading this as a teenager and enjoying it. Things have really changed!

Do not kill yourselves reading this ladies, I really don't know that I am going to get through it myself. What hard work! Forgive me for choosing it.

I think Carol is going to be in Cuba, I know that Meg is forsaking us in favour of going to see a Bon Jovi concert. (what nerve)

We'll have a nice meal and a chat anyway. See you next Monday, the 10th.

PS. I rented 'Becoming Jane', Lorna was right, it is good and Anne Hathaway did a fine job.
